End_ICE_detention_IMG_9378-1 2024 PILGRIMAGE TO END DETENTION: A JOURNEY TOWARD FREEDOM

First stop: Golden State Annex - McFarland, CA

It's hard to overstate the incredible humanity of the 50+ people involved in the pilgrimage to shut down the 6 remaining ICE detention centers in California... plus all the communities and organizations that are coming together to share their stories and their work. People providing legal services, support or accompaniment to immigrant families and those detained. People who have themselves been detained, or have had a parent or loved one detained for long periods of time and suffered the incredible trauma caused by this system of for-profit immigrant detention centers widely considered more dehumanizing and abusive than actual US prisons.

So many stories.

Some in our group were on the other side of the walls at Golden State Annex and Mesa Verde in 2022 or 2023, when the last pilgrimages rallied outside and held vigils. Some had helped to organize previous hunger and labor strikes to demand better conditions and had been greatly lifted up by just knowing that there were people outside the walls who knew that they were there and cared. And, they vowed to join with people doing this work if it ever became possible for them.

Currently, there are labor and hunger strikes happening in 3 out of the 6 ICE detention centers in CA and our group was able to connect via speaker phone with numerous people inside so that they could share their stories and know they were not alone.

The message from our group to those inside -
"Keep Hope Alive. We see you - We feel you - We're here with you"
