Rebuilding and restoring a wetland near Fife, WA The SR 167 Completion Project includes a unique program to restore more than 150 acres of wetlands on both sides of I-5 near Fife. The restoration work includes realigning Hylebos Creek and putting in about 800,000 native plants and trees. Decades ago, Hylebos Creek was rerouted into what was essentially an irrigation ditch so that the surrounding wetlands could serve agricultural and industrial needs. This resulted in a slow decline in the fish and wildlife population. It also led to chronic flooding on I-5 because the natural reservoir areas that absorbed extra water from heavy rainstorms no longer existed. Crews are turning it back into wetlands. In summer 2023, our crews excavated and realigned Hylebos Creek west of SR 99. In the winter and spring of 2024, they started adding plants to the area. This section west of SR 99 will have roughly 80,000 new trees, shrubs and other vegetation in a carefully laid out grid pattern. This will add diversity to the ecosystem to encourage the return of more wildlife. The SR 167 Completion project is part of WSDOT’s Puget Sound Gateway Program which completes critical links in Washington’s highway and freight network. It will build an important new connection to the Port of Tacoma, improve the movement of freight and reduce congestion on local roads and highways.
