Morro Bay / gull - radio listener? (# 194122) This gull stayed in the same place as I walked past the car twice (and it had been there when I drove up.) I snapped the picture quickly since there was someone in the car listening to his radio and talking on his phone (and seeminly not knowing of his visitor). Maybe the gull liked the music? This appears to be a young Western Gull (see link below). In the picture it looks the gull might be standing on a rag, it’s not. The Cambria Historical Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the history of the Cambria area, located on the Central Coast of California. Founded in 1966, the Society is the oldest historical organization in San Luis Obispo County.

The Society's mission is to collect, preserve, and interpret the rich heritage of the area. The Society is responsible for the preservation of local historic buildings, sites, and artifacts, as well as the collection and preservation of local oral histories.

The Society also maintains educational programs, including lectures, seminars, and field trips. The Society also sponsors events such as the annual Heritage Festival, which celebrates the history of the area.

The Cambria Historical Society operates the Cambria Historical Museum, which houses a variety of artifacts, documents, photographs, and other items that tell the story of Cambria's past. The museum also offers a variety of educational programs, including a lecture series that covers a variety of topics related to the history of the area.

The Society also maintains a research library, which is open to the public. The library contains books, periodicals, and other documents related to the history of the area.

Morro Bay / otter wonders… (# 0991) Back closer to the harbor docks (Morro Rock is behind me). The mass nearest me of bumps in some form of sea grass is actually a combination of otters and clumps of that grass, though I can’t tell them apart in this picture. Adjacent to this photo will be a video where some of the otters are moving around and you can see them better. Re the paddleboards, there’s multiple places around the harbor that rent them out. Whether they rent out courtesy towards marine life is not something I saw advertised (:
Morro Bay / Morro Rock seagulls+ (# 0987) <u><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morro_Rock" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Morro Rock</a></u>, a very steep volcanic plug, with a surprising large green bush and yellow flowers kept moist by the lingering fog, plus 3 visible seagulls perched fairly high on the rock at a roughly equal elevation. Seagulls: zoom in on the most visible seagull in the upper right, there’s one behind it that you can only see by zooming, and there’s one fairly far off to its right. There may be two others to the right of that last one, and there may be one more fairly far above the first one.
Morro Bay / kid wonder! (# 0989) A local nonprofit that was operating a daily activity for about 40 local kids on the beach at Morro Rock, that looked wonderful. As I had walked by earlier, the kids were doing quick water color impressions of the beach, which all got posted. They were then divided into two groups, the group shown here and a group learning about surfboards (adjacent picture). These kids were doing various group athletic exercises (I missed that picture). Unfortunately I didn’t get the name of the group, but it was somehow associated with the local parks department.

Morro Bay / kid wonder! (# 0990) A local nonprofit that was operating a daily activity for about 40 local kids on the beach at Morro Rock, that looked wonderful (see adjacent picture). These kids were assigned surfboards and sent out to learn about using them – there’s multiple instructors out in the water with them. The group in the adjacent pictures swapped places with this group, as I was leaving.

Morro Bay Smoke Stacks, Morro Bay California As we were heading out of the harbor this morning, there was a heavy fog covering the stacks as the sun was beginning to rise. When I go fishing, I do not carry my DSLR camera. This photo was taken with my iPhone 13 from the boat. I decided to share this photo because of the amount of noise in the photo, I found it to be very interesting and unique. They're impossible to miss: three smokestacks towering 450 feet above the bay, providing a man-made counterpoint to Morro Rock. Morro Bay Power Plant is the single most architecturally defined power plant in California representing generally the dramatic era of post-World War II economic prosperity and specifically the spread of cutting edge thermo-electric power generation. Under construction in March 1954 Designed by the prominent San Francisco architect William Gladstone Merchant, the MBPP is an impressive example of international modernism. In addition to combining the functional needs of the power plant with the forceful geometric ideals of the modern movement, Merchant also used materials in an expressive manner. Aluminum was a signature material reflecting the modern age. Its clear lines reflected machine precision, and aluminum was as commonly used as copper for overhead transmission lines. The plant consisted of four generating units, the first two of which were constructed 1953- 1956, and the final two in 1961-1963. It was the 16th steam plant in the PG&E system, the 6th built after World War II, and the 4th largest in terms of generation of electricity. MBPP officially stopped producing electricity in 2014, though the stacks are still standing (as of 2020). The plant has changed hands a number of times over the decades, with the final operator Dynegy having been purchased by Vistra Energy. Vistra has indicated a willingness to work with the city on any future potential uses of the site, written by Thomas Kessler
