ATKINS, VA

THOMPSON VALLEY I grew up in Thompson Valley in Tazewell County, Virginia. Some of my early ancestors, Archibald and William Thompson were the first settlers of the area obtaining Land grans in 1789 and 1793. They are buried in cemeteries in the valley that bears their name.

The Settlers Museum is a historical museum located in the town of Atkins, Virginia. The museum was established in 1974 and is dedicated to preserving the history of the Appalachian region. The museum is housed in a building that was once a general store and post office, dating back to the late 1800s.

The museum features exhibits that showcase the daily lives and struggles of the early Appalachian settlers. The exhibits include artifacts such as tools, clothing, and household items. There is also a section dedicated to the Native American tribes that inhabited the area before the arrival of the settlers.

One of the most notable exhibits in the museum is the "Hearth Room," which is a recreated early 1900s kitchen. The room features a wood-burning stove, butter churns, and other items that would have been found in a typical Appalachian home during that time period.

In addition to the exhibits, the Settlers Museum also hosts events and workshops throughout the year, including traditional music performances and demonstrations of old-time crafts such as quilting and blacksmithing.

Overall, the Settlers Museum provides a fascinating glimpse into the history and culture of the early settlers of the Appalachian region, making it a must-visit destination for history buffs and anyone interested in learning more about this unique area of the United States.
