Portrait in Brick (Lamont Cranston--The Shadow Knows) (Indulging in Nostalgia) (M) This is a creative commons image, which you may freely use by linking to this page. Please respect the photographer and his work.

Seeing my shadow on a brick wall on my back porch prompted this playful photo. I've been told it also resembles the outline of a werewolf!

The Shadow appeared on the radio July 31, 1930 as part of the Detective Story Hour to develop sales for the monthly magazine of the same name. Popularity followed as a new magazine The Shadow Magazine debuted in April 1931. A new radio show came into being in 1937 featuring Orson Welles as Lamont Cranston aka "The Shadow". Radio programming lasted at least through 1954. The Shadow appeared in pulp fiction, comic strips, radio, movies, and television. The classic line "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!" has become part of the American idiom. I vividly recall hearing shows on radio when I was a young kid.

For the curious--many radio episodes, short films, publications found in a search at Internet Archive archive.org/search?query=subject%3A%22The+Shadow%22

A blues band named The Lamont Cranston Band began its musical life in 1969. The influence of The Shadow has been significant in American culture. See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shadow
