The Shadow appeared on the radio July 31, 1930 as part of the Detective Story Hour to develop sales for the monthly magazine of the same name. Popularity followed as a new magazine The Shadow Magazine debuted in April 1931. A new radio show came into being in 1937 featuring Orson Welles as Lamont Cranston aka "The Shadow". Radio programming lasted at least through 1954. The Shadow appeared in pulp fiction, comic strips, radio, movies, and television. The classic line "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!" has become part of the American idiom. I vividly recall hearing shows on radio when I was a young kid. Historic Boydton SRenaissance Inc. (HBSR) is a nonprofit organization in Boydton VA, dedicated to revitalizing the historic district of Boydton. HBSR was founded in 1998 with the mission of preserving the historic character of the area, while encouraging economic growth and development. HBSR works to preserve the town's architectural and cultural heritage, while fostering economic development and creating viable job opportunities in the community.

HBSR’s main objective is to restore and maintain the architectural integrity of Boydton through renovation and rehabilitation of existing buildings, while supporting new construction that is compatible with the town’s historic character. HBSR also works to create a vibrant arts and cultural district in Boydton, and to encourage cultural activities that bring the community together.

HBSR has been successful in its mission, having completed over 100 projects in the last 20 years. These projects have included the renovation of historic buildings, the installation of public art, and the development of a community center and a museum. HBSR has also worked with local businesses to create job opportunities for the town’s residents.

HBSR’s efforts have been rewarded with the recognition of Boydton’s historic district as a National Historic Landmark. This designation has encouraged more visitors to the town, and has led to an increase in economic activity.

The success of HBSR’s mission has been a source of pride for the citizens of Boydton, and the organization continues to strive to preserve the town’s unique character and landscape.

[There are 18 photos in this series] Our second ice storm this week (in February 2021) is now over. Despite the terror freezing rain holds, there is amazing beauty in the created ice glaze. The ice storm lasted about 34 hours with a welcome 7 hour break. It took less than 2 hours for all of it to melt. Ice on puddles in my yard, on my car, on the trees, on the street. All scenes are in Chase City, Mecklenburg County, Virginia. Shrine, MacCallum More Gardens [The MacCallum More Museum and Gardens album contains 32 photos] This is a creative commons image, which you may freely use by linking to this page. Please respect the photographer and his work. This is a religious shrine consisting of a roofed stone column, closed in, with a religious statue; here the statue is probably the Virgin Mary. They often marked a road to a holy site and commonly used by travelers for prayer. This was undoubtedly a Roman Catholic shrine that found its way to MacCallum More Gardens in Chase City, Virginia (Mecklenburg County). "A wayside shrine is a religious image, usually in some sort of small shelter, placed by a road or pathway, sometimes in a settlement or at a crossroads, but often in the middle of an empty stretch of country road, or at the top of a hill or mountain. They have been a feature of many cultures, including Chinese folk religious communities, Catholic and Orthodox Europe and some Asian regions." <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayside_shrine" rel="noreferrer nofollow">en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayside_shrine</a> The museum and gardens are part of the MacCallum More and Hudgins House Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places #09001051. The following information is quoted from the NRHP nomination form prepared by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources ((DHR # 186-5020) “MacCallum More is a six-acre property that includes the house, a guest cottage, a museum, and extensive gardens. The gardens were begun in 1929 by Lucy Morton Hudgins and expanded by her son, Commander William Henry Hudgins, in the 1940s, 1960s, and 1970s. Charles F. Gillette, a prominent Virginia landscape architect consulted on the design of the gardens. The gardens are enclosed by walls constructed of stones from the chimneys and foundations of numerous eighteenth and nineteenth century buildings that once stood in the surrounding countryside. There are numerous statues, structures, fountains, and artifacts, imported from Europe and the Far East by Commander Hudgins, in the gardens and adorning the stone walls. The museum and the gardens are open to the public, and MacCallum More can be used for meetings and small private parties.
