WHARTON MEMORIAL FOUNDATION

The Wharton Memorial Foundation is a nonprofit organization located in Bedford, Virginia dedicated to preserving the legacy of the Wharton family and educating the public about the history of the region. The foundation was established in 1988 by the late John W. Wharton Jr. and his wife, Jane.

The foundation operates two historic properties: The Elks Home and Wharton Cottage. The Elks Home is a large, Georgian-style mansion built in 1905 that was once the national headquarters of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. The home was donated to the foundation in the 1980s and has since been restored and opened to the public for tours and events.

Wharton Cottage is a smaller, one-story home that was built in the early 1800s and was once the home of John Wharton Sr. and his family. The cottage has been restored and is also open to the public for tours.

In addition to preserving these historic properties, the Wharton Memorial Foundation also hosts educational programs, events, and workshops related to local history, genealogy, and preservation. The foundation is run by a board of directors and relies on donations and volunteer support to continue its mission of preserving and sharing the history of the Wharton family and the region.
