PEST HOUSE MEDICAL MUSEUM is a historical medical facility located in Lynchburg, Virginia. The museum is housed in a small building that was constructed in 1806 to quarantine people with infectious diseases, such as yellow fever and smallpox. The Pest House, as it was known, was in operation until 1892 when it was converted into a storage facility.
In 1992, the building was restored to its original condition and transformed into the Pest House Medical Museum. The museum features exhibits on the history of medicine and medical practices during the 18th and 19th centuries. Visitors can view medical equipment, instruments, and artifacts used during that time, including an iron lung, surgical tools, and apothecary jars.
One of the main attractions of the museum is the operating room, which is set up to replicate an early 19th-century surgery. The room is complete with a wooden operating table, surgical tools, and a display of preserved human organs.
The Pest House Medical Museum also offers educational programs and tours for school groups and visitors. The museum is open to the public from April to October, and admission is free. It is a unique historical site that provides a glimpse into the early days of medical practices and the challenges of treating infectious diseases.
