1908 COURTHOUSE FOUNDATION

The 1908 Courthouse Foundation is a historic building located in Independence, Virginia. The courthouse was constructed in 1908 and served as the primary judicial facility for Grayson County for over seven decades. The courthouse is a two-story brick building with a central entrance and a hipped roof. It features an elegant neoclassical design with Corinthian columns, a pedimented entrance, and a symmetrical facade. The courthouse has a total area of approximately 25,000 square feet.

In 1986, the courthouse was replaced by a new facility, and the building was slated for demolition. However, a group of concerned citizens formed the 1908 Courthouse Foundation to save the historic structure. The foundation raised funds to purchase the building, and it was restored to its original grandeur. Today, the courthouse houses a museum dedicated to the history of Grayson County.

The 1908 Courthouse Foundation is now a popular tourist destination for visitors interested in history and architecture. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been recognized as a Virginia Historic Landmark. The courthouse is open to the public and offers guided tours, exhibits, and events throughout the year.
