Friends of Morgantina is a non-profit organization based in Charlottesville, Virginia that aims to support the archaeological site of Morgantina in Sicily, Italy. The organization was founded in 1998 by a group of archaeologists and concerned citizens who were alarmed by the looting, destruction, and neglect of the site.

Morgantina is an ancient Greek and Roman city that was inhabited from the 8th century BCE until the 5th century CE. It is known for its impressive architectural remains, including a large sanctuary, a theater, and a residential area. However, the site has suffered from illegal excavations, vandalism, and lack of funding for conservation and research.

NGC7293_20201014 NGC 7293 / C 63 / The Helix Nebula The Helix Nebula is a planetary nebula located about 650 light years away. This beautiful object demonstrates the inescapable death of a star as it expels its atmosphere into space at the end of its life. The exposed core of the dying star can be seen in the nebula's center, ionizing the surrounding shell with powerful ultraviolet radiation. The blue-green color comes from doubly ionized oxygen and the red from ionized hydrogen. Inevitably, our Sun will suffer a similar fate in a few billion years. I'm finally back with another deep-sky astrophoto. The data for this image has been sitting in the archives since 2020, I just never had the time and energy to focus on it until now. My image processing skills (and the tools in PixInsight) have improved dramatically over the last 4 years, so it was worth waiting! Guiding Lights With light falling fast, NS 14Z came hurtling north through Lynnwood and reached us at the N&W signals at Lewis Run, Virginia. These aging US&S signals were ones I had previously thought had come down, but it turned out that CP Lynnwood, the south end of this siding, were the signals that had fallen instead. Save for the addition of the PTC antenna, little at Lewis Run had changed since my visit the year prior. Still, these signals have little time left as replacements strike down more and more of the N&W veterans. Later this same night, after the remnants of the falling suns light had dissipated, we set up for star trails here. It was a long, long night at these signals to say the least! ...and that also caps off 2023. Quite the year, suffice to say. Fewer photos this year, but big things in the personal life. Pretty wild year. I wonder what's in store for next year... who knows!
