NGC7293_20201014 NGC 7293 / C 63 / The Helix Nebula

The Helix Nebula is a planetary nebula located about 650 light years away. This beautiful object demonstrates the inescapable death of a star as it expels its atmosphere into space at the end of its life. The exposed core of the dying star can be seen in the nebula's center, ionizing the surrounding shell with powerful ultraviolet radiation. The blue-green color comes from doubly ionized oxygen and the red from ionized hydrogen. Inevitably, our Sun will suffer a similar fate in a few billion years.

I'm finally back with another deep-sky astrophoto. The data for this image has been sitting in the archives since 2020, I just never had the time and energy to focus on it until now. My image processing skills (and the tools in PixInsight) have improved dramatically over the last 4 years, so it was worth waiting!

The Vietnam Graffiti Project is an ongoing effort to preserve and document the graffiti left by soldiers on the walls of a former military base in Vietnam. The project began in 1996 when a group of veterans returned to the base, now known as the Khe Sanh Combat Base, to find that the graffiti they had left during the war was still intact.

The graffiti covers the walls of various structures on the base, including bunkers, mess halls, and latrines. The messages range from humorous and irreverent to poignant and heartfelt. Many soldiers left their names, ranks, and dates of service, while others wrote messages to loved ones or expressed their feelings about the war.

The Vietnam Graffiti Project aims to preserve this unique historical record by documenting the graffiti through photographs and video, as well as by cataloging and transcribing the messages. The project also seeks to educate the public about the experiences of Vietnam veterans and the impact of the war on both soldiers and civilians.

The project is based in Keswick, Virginia and is run by a team of volunteers, many of whom are themselves Vietnam veterans. The graffiti at the Khe Sanh Combat Base continues to be a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served in Vietnam, and the Vietnam Graffiti Project is dedicated to ensuring that their voices are heard and their stories are remembered.
