On top of Birch Knob The top of this knob, which those stairs climb up to an overlook, marks the end of Virginia's Appalachia region and the border of eastern Kentucky. This side is Virginia and the other is Kentucky. It's way off the beaten track.
Dusk at Breaks Interstate Park I'm taking a photo of one the oldest mountain ranges in the world from my Appalachian vantage point in Virginia, looking down the Russell Fork into Kentucky. It is off the beaten path. These settled mountains of Appalachia used to be a tall mountain range that formed the backbone of the supercontinent of Pangea. Through the eons, its ancient forests became highly diverse.
