Valentines, Virginia Post Office 1 [A set of four photos] This is a creative commons image, which you may freely use by linking to this page. Please respect the photographer and his work.

The post office building at Valentines in Brunswick County, Virginia dates to before 1924. It is a simple, functional clapboard structure with a gabled tin roof and a single chimney. The shed roof of the porch is supported by four battered posts on brick piers. On the front gable are what seem to be two vents, one diamond-shaped and one triangular. Mail boxes are outside under the porch roof as shown in the 4th photo in this set.

Valentines Post Office came into existence in 1887 when a local farmer and merchant, William Henry Valentine, put in an application for a post office in his area and gave his name as the would-be post office's name. He was postmaster until 1911. In 1924 the post office was moved to the nearby Robert Clary's Store. William Wright eventually bought the store where he had begun as postmaster in 1947 and served as postmaster for over 50 years. The building then was both a general store and post office, not an unusual combination for a rural community. A Mountain Dew sign on the premises identifies the structure as Wright's General Merchandise. The sign on the building names the post office and shows a fading painted heart. Wright created a special heart-shaped postmark that achieved popularity for those who wanted a romantic postmark on their Valentines Day cards. The Love stamps of 1995 featured cherubs (taken from an artwork by Raphael) and the first day of issue was at Valentines, Viginia. The store has ceased to be, and the structure is solely a post office with various mementoes from the past inside.
