ADAM THOROUGHGOOD HOUSE

The Adam Thoroughgood House is a historic house located in Virginia Beach, Virginia. It is one of the oldest surviving colonial homes in the United States, and the oldest surviving house in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. The house was built in 1636 by Adam Thoroughgood, a successful tobacco planter, and was owned by the Thoroughgood family until the early 20th century. The house is a two-story, timber-framed structure with a steep gable roof and two large brick chimneys. The house is constructed of a mixture of local woods, including oak, pine, cypress, and hickory. The house features a framed porch, called a “porch-entrance”, which is a common feature of 17th century colonial homes in Virginia. The interior of the house is largely unchanged from its original layout, with a large center hall, two parlors, and two bedrooms. The house also includes several period-appropriate outbuildings, including a smokehouse, kitchen, and a shed that was used for storage. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is open for public tours. It is a popular destination for visitors interested in learning more about the region’s early colonial history.
