Boeing B-47E Stratojet "Pride of the Adirondacks" Clyde A. Lewis Park
Plattsburgh, New York

Assigned to Plattsburgh AFB as a member of the 380th Bomb Wing in 1956, "Pride of the Adirondacks" served the US Strategic Air Command (SAC) as a front line long-range nuclear bomber through some of the most volatile years of the Cold War. In addition to a 1957 wing deployment to RAF Brize Norton, this aircraft also stood fully loaded and on high alert during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, ready to deliver a nuclear strike to either the Soviet Union or Cuba if ordered.

"Pride of the Adirondacks" and her crew took part in SAC's 14th Bombing and Navigation competition at Fairchild AFB, Washington in September 1965, returning to Plattsburg Six days later having won top honors among all SAC B-47 units; 'Best B-47 Crew, Bombing', 'Best B-47 Crew, Combined' and 'Best B-47 Unit'. These accolades led to the aircraft being unofficially labeled the "World's Best B-47". Despite her and her crew's impressive performance, less than three weeks after the competition the B-47 began to be phased out of front-line duty in favor of the B-52 Stratofortress throughout the SAC wings and by the start of 1966 the "Pride of the Adirondacks" was deactivated.

Instead of being ferried into storage at Davis-Monthan AFB like many of her fellow wing aircraft, the "Pride of the Adirondacks" was towed to the gate of Plattsburgh AFB in February 1966 and formally dedicated as a memorial to the crews and maintenance men who flew and supported B-47s at the base on March 21st, 1966.
