OLD CONSTITUTION HOUSE

Old Constitution House in Windsor, Vermont, is a state-owned historic site that commemorates the drafting and signing of the Vermont Constitution in 1777. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the United States.
The Old Constitution House was originally built in 1764 as a private home for Ira Allen and his family. The house quickly became a hub of civic and political activity in Windsor. In the summer of 1777, the house was chosen as the site for the drafting of the Vermont Constitution. On July 8th, the delegates gathered in the parlor of the house and drafted the document. The Vermont Constitution was the first written constitution in North America and established Vermont as an independent republic. On July 9th, the delegates signed the document in the house and the Vermont Republic was officially born.
Today, the Old Constitution House is open to the public for tours. Visitors can explore the house and learn more about the events that took place there. The house is filled with artifacts and artwork that tell the story of Vermont’s history. The building also serves as a museum and education center, hosting a variety of programs and events throughout the year.
