Fireflies of Thompson Century Farms I didn't know until recently that there are fireflies in Utah. They like areas that are moist, dark, warm, and have tall grass. There are many places in the state that meet those requirements. This farmland is one of those places.

I'm part of a local photography club, and the owner of the land invited us to come see and photograph the bugs at night. The invitation was extended twice, and this was my second visit.

Capturing fireflies was an unusual and difficult challenge for me. The biggest obstacle the first time was knowing how best to focus the camera in the dark. We aren't allowed to use lights because it affects the bugs' mating. During the second visit I figured I'd find a spot where I could focus my camera, and then simply leave it there the whole time and shoot just in that same spot so that I'd know it was in focus. I think for next time I'd try to focus in on a smaller area. Trying to capture a large scene made it so that the bugs were smaller and not as central to the image as I'd have liked.

Utah Lake Sunset This was a 7-image panorama of the senset at Utah Lake. I'm still trying to figure out how to compose a good panorama's landscapes, and sunset shots. It was just above freezing and pretty windy. That cloud was a lot fluffier and nice looking about 15 minutes prior to this photo. Then over time it seemed to just clump all together into a dense cloud.
