US MORMON BATTALION A COR

The United States Mormon Battalion A Corps in Sandy, Utah, was an auxiliary unit of the United States Army from 1846 to 1848. Its mission was to assist in the Mexican-American War, and it was comprised of approximately 500 Latter-Day Saints (LDS) volunteers. The Battalion was led by Colonel Philip St. George Cooke and was the only religiously-based unit in US military history.
The Battalion marched from Council Bluffs, Iowa, to San Diego, California, a distance of approximately 2,000 miles, in just five months. Along the way, they fought in several battles, including the Battle of San Pasqual and the Battle of San Gabriel. They also performed engineering feats, such as bridging rivers, building military roads and fortifications, and constructing boats to navigate the Colorado River.
The Battalion included a “sick detachment” of men who were too ill to march, but who were still able to provide support and medical care. After their successful march, the Battalion was disbanded near Los Angeles, California, in July 1847. Some of the volunteers returned home to Utah, while others opted to stay in California and pursue careers in farming and business.
The service of the US Mormon Battalion has been commemorated with several memorials and monuments, including the Mormon Battalion Monument in San Diego, California, the Mormon Battalion Visitor Center in San Diego, and the Mormon Battalion Historic Site in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The Battalion’s legacy continues to be celebrated today by members of the LDS Church and by the US Army.
