The Utah State Historical Society is a non-profit organization that operates as an agency of the Utah state government. Founded in 1897, the Society is dedicated to the preservation, interpretation, and distribution of Utah's past. The Society's headquarters is located in Salt Lake City and houses a research center, library, archives, collections, exhibits, and a museum. The Society is responsible for the preservation and management of over 1.5 million artifacts and over 40,000 photographs.

The research center is open to the public and provides access to published materials, maps, and records related to Utah history. The library holds over 30,000 volumes and includes books, maps, periodicals, newspapers, and other documents. The archives contain records of local governments, businesses, and individuals that document the history and development of Utah.

The Society's collections include artifacts and documents related to the history of Utah, including photographs, manuscripts, art, maps, and artifacts related to the state's history. The Society also operates two museum locations in Salt Lake City. The Rio Grande Depot Museum is located in the historic Rio Grande Depot and features exhibits on the history of the railroad in Utah. The Eccles Rail Center Museum is located at the University of Utah and features interactive exhibits on the history of the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific Railroads.

The Society is committed to the education of Utah's citizens and visitors through its programs, publications, and exhibits. Its annual events include the Utah History Fair, the Utah History Conference, and the Utah Heritage Foundation Awards. The Society also provides educational resources, including lectures and workshops, to schools and other organizations throughout the state.
