USS CHARA

ALLEN, TX

The USS Chara (AK-58) is a Liberty-class cargo ship located in Allen, Texas. It was built in 1944 by the Oregon Shipbuilding Corporation in Portland, Oregon. The vessel was named after the Greek goddess of joy and victory, Chara.

The USS Chara was used during World War II and was a part of the Pacific Fleet. It was involved in the Battle of Okinawa and provided much-needed supplies to the Allied troops fighting in the region. After the war, it was decommissioned in 1946, and eventually sold off in 1959.

In 2002, the USS Chara was acquired by the Collin County Historical Commission and relocated to Allen, Texas. It currently stands as a memorial to commemorate the contributions of all veterans who served during World War II.

The USS Chara is a two-story steel hull ship that measures approximately 195 feet long and 32 feet wide. It features an open deck, a pilothouse, and a cargo hold. There is also a single engine room located on the lower deck.

The USS Chara has been restored to its original condition and features historical displays, artifacts, and interactive exhibits which tell the story of the ship and its crew. Visitors can also view the engine room and the bridge.

The USS Chara serves as an important reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who served during World War II. It is a symbol of hope and a reminder of the courage and strength of those who fought and died for our freedom.
