Waco Skyline from Interstate 35, Waco, TX Founded prior to European settlement as a village of the indigenous Waco people, the city of Waco was settled by European-Americans beginning in 1838, and was platted in 1849. The city began to grow in the 1860s with the completion of the Waco Suspension Bridge, which allowed traffic to cross the Brazos River, and increased further with the arrival of railroads to the city in the 1880s. The city continued growing in the 20th Century, despite the setbacks of the Great Depression, racially motivated lynchings of black men, and an F5 tornado that struck Downtown Waco in 1953. The city today is the 14th largest urban area in Texas, home to approximately 268,000 people, as well as Baylor University, a large Baptist-affiliated institution of higher learning.
