The Fort Davis Historical Society (FDHS) is a non-profit organization founded in 1975 with the aim of preserving the history and culture of Fort Davis, Texas. The organization is located in the old Davis Hotel, a two-story brick building built in the 1880s. The FDHS offers a variety of programs and activities for the community, including educational programs, annual events, and a museum.

The museum houses the collection of artifacts, photographs, and documents related to the history of Fort Davis and the surrounding area. It includes items such as military uniforms, weapons, and historical documents. The FDHS also offers guided tours of historic sites in Fort Davis, such as the former military fort, the historic courthouse, and the old post office.

The FDHS also hosts educational programs for both adults and children. These include lectures, presentations, and workshops on topics such as local history, archaeology, and Native American culture. The FDHS also hosts several annual events throughout the year, such as the Fort Davis Historical Celebration and the Cowboy Day Festival.

The bulk of this biography is from the National Park Service <a href="https://www.nps.gov/people/henryflipper.htm" rel="noreferrer nofollow">www.nps.gov/people/henryflipper.htm</a> Henry Ossian Flipper (1856-1940) was born into slavery in Thomasville, Georgia. Though not the first African American to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point in New York, he was the first black graduate of the academy. His experience there was one of isolation. He wrote “There was no society for me to enjoy—no friends, male or female, for me to visit, or with whom I could have any social intercourse, so absolute was my isolation.” Graduating in 1877, Flipper was assigned duty in the 10th Cavalry at Fort Sill in Oklahoma. Excelling iin engineering at West Point, he became the lead supervisor for a drainage system at the post to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds. The project was called “Flipper’s Ditch.” Still used today, the ditch became a National Historic Landmark in 1977. Reassigned briefly to Fort Concho in Texas in 1880, Flipper moved on to Fort Davis as quartermaster and acting commissary officer. Funds came up missing but were repaid. Nevertheless Flipper was court-martialed in 1881. No proof emerged that he had embezzled money; however, he was dismissed from the army on the "charge of conduct unbecoming an officer and gentleman." He was dismissed from the army with a dishonorable discharge. Characteristic of the times "in two prior situations involving white officers who had been found guilty of embezzlement, neither was dismissed nor dishonored." After the discharge, Flipper was successful in a surveying and mining career in the Southwestern region. In addition he was employed by the Department of the Interior in Alaska and Washington state. He was never able to clear the dishonorable discharge during his lifetime. He died in 1940 in Atlanta, Georgia at the age of 84. Flipper's descendants worked to clear his name. Finally the discharge was changed to a good conduct discharge. In 1999, President Clinton pardoned Flipper and revised the unjust court-martial. Flipper wrote two books about his life, the first in 1878--The colored cadet at West Point. Autobiography of Lieut. Henry Ossian Flipper, U. S. A., first graduate of color from the U. S.
