It was built in 1939-40 as a New Deal Federal Works Progress Administration (WPA) project. Old Southern Pacific Railroad Freight Depot (Brenham, Texas) Historical Marker for the old Southern Pacific Railroad Freight Depot in Brenham, Texas. The plaque reads: "In the early 1860s, local residents built a county rail line to connect to the Houston & Texas Central Railway, which bought the line in 1869. Brenham became a regional distribution center, and its population grew dramatically. Circa 1916, the H&TC, then owned by Southern Pacific Railroad Co., built this depot. Southern Pacific maintained a presence in Brenham until 1975. The brick rectangular building retains its original brick and limestone stringcourses and Prairie School influenced corbelled pendants. Today it serves as a reminder of the town’s early growth as a railroad center. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark – 2003"

The depot was built by Houston and Texas Central Railway (H&TC), later to be acquired by Southern Pacific. The depot was designated as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 2003. It was also included as a contributing resource to the Brenham Downtown Historic District (NRHP District No. 04000154).

The Victorian style commercial building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004 as a contributing resource to the Brenham Downtown Historic District (NRHP District No. 04000154).
