Ware, raised a company in Galveston at the beginning of the Civil War. Shortly afterward he was assigned to duty on the staff of General Hamilton Prioleau Bee and was subsequently elected Colonel of a regiment of Cavalry and stationed in and about Galveston for the defense of the coast until the close of the War. The three braided ornaments, the seven buttons, and the six stars all indicate the rank of Colonel. Buff was the trim color for General Officers and Officers of the General Staff.
