OLD CENTRAL CULTURAL CENTER

Old Central Cultural Center is a historic building located in Galveston, Texas. The center was built in 1914 as the city's first public high school for African American students during the era of segregation. The building is a two-story brick structure with a Classical Revival style architecture, featuring symmetrical facades and a central entrance with a pedimented portico supported by four Doric columns.

In 1968, the school closed and the building was repurposed as a cultural center. The center has since served as a hub for the African American community in Galveston, hosting numerous events, meetings, and performances. The center also houses the Galveston County African American Museum, which showcases the history and contributions of African Americans in the region.

The Old Central Cultural Center has been recognized as a Texas Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building underwent a major restoration in 2013, which included the installation of a new roof, the repair of the original windows, and the restoration of the interior spaces. Today, the center continues to be an important cultural institution in Galveston, providing a space for community gatherings and preserving the city's African American heritage.
