The American Film Institute (AFI) is a non-profit film school and research center based in Los Angeles, California. Founded in 1967, it is dedicated to educating filmmakers and honoring the heritage of the motion picture arts in America. AFI's educational program offers a post-graduate degree in filmmaking and offers workshops and seminars for aspiring filmmakers of all levels, from novice to professional. The institute also hosts an annual film festival, AFI Fest, which showcases films from around the world.
AFI's research and preservation programs are dedicated to preserving film heritage and increasing public awareness of the importance of film in American culture. The AFI Catalog of Feature Films is a comprehensive database of American films released between 1893 and 2020. AFI's Heritage Programs promote the preservation of classic films through screenings and educational programs.
AFI also runs a variety of programs to promote film and television production in the United States, including the AFI Conservatory, which offers industry-level training in directing, producing, writing, editing and cinematography. The institute also awards competitive grants to filmmakers and provides educational resources to teachers, students and the general public.
AFI's Los Angeles campus is located in Hollywood, a few blocks away from the famous TCL Chinese Theatre, and includes screening rooms, classrooms, and a library. The institute also has offices in Washington, D.C. and New York City.
