Texas: San Jacinto Museum - Sam Houston The plaster bust model of Sam Houston by the 19th century artist Elisabet Ney was created in 1898 and used as a model for the heroic sculpture of the Texan that resides in the Capitol in Austin. The San Jacinto Museum of History, focusing on the history of the Battle of San Jacinto and Texas culture and heritage, is located inside he base of the San Jacinto monument. Part of the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site located on the Houston Ship Channel, the monument commemorates the site of the Battle of San Jacinto, the decisive battle of the Texas Revolution. The 567.31-foot high monument, the world's tallest masonry column is topped with a 34-foot, 220-ton Lone Star. Construction on the monument began in 1936, and it was dedicated in 1939.
