Hannig was a German immigrant cabinetmaker and fifth husband of Susanna Dickinson (or Dickerson). Dickinson migrated to Texas from Tennessee in 1830 and settled in Gonzales on the San Marcos River. The "Battle of Gonzales" (1835), the opening salvo of the Texas Revolution, was fought over their possession of a cannon. Her husband, Almaron Dickinson, joined other Texas volunteers in San Antonio after the "battle;" she joined him later that year; in Feb. 1836 they and others moved into the Alamo. She and her daughter. along with other women, survived the ensuring "Battle of the Alamo" (6 March 1836). After release she returned to Gonzales and later followed the Texas army eastward toward Harrisburg (later renamed Houston). Some refer to her as "The Messenger of the Alamo.")
