Fort D.A. Russell is a historic military installation located in Marfa, Texas. The fort was established in 1911 as a base for the United States Army in the Southwest. It was named after Civil War hero David A. Russell and was used as a training center for troops during World War I and II.

The fort comprises approximately 1,500 acres and includes a variety of buildings, including barracks, officers’ quarters, and administrative buildings. Many of these structures were built in a distinctive Spanish Colonial Revival style, which was popular during the early 20th century.

One of the most notable features of Fort D.A. Russell is its airfield, which was used for training pilots during World War II. Today, the airfield is still in use and is home to the Marfa Municipal Airport.

In addition to its military history, Fort D.A. Russell is also known for its association with the arts. In the 1970s, the fort was used as a location for the filming of the movie “Giant,” which starred Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, and James Dean. Today, the fort is home to the Chinati Foundation, which is dedicated to preserving and promoting minimalist art.
