J.W. Hannig Building J.W. Hannig Building (arch: Jasper Newton Preston; 1876; Renaissance Revival), 206 E. 6th St., Austin TX.

(J.W. Hannig was a German immigrant cabinetmaker and fifth husband of Susanna Dickinson (or Dickerson). Dickinson migrated to Texas from Tennessee in 1830 and settled in Gonzales on the San Marcos River. The &quot;Battle of Gonzales&quot; (1835), the opening salvo of the Texas Revolution, was fought over their possession of a cannon. Her husband, Almaron Dickinson, joined other Texas volunteers in San Antonio after the &quot;battle;&quot; she joined him later that year; in Feb. 1836 they and others moved into the Alamo. She and her daughter. along with other women, survived the ensuring &quot;Battle of the Alamo&quot; (6 March 1836). After release she returned to Gonzales and later followed the Texas army eastward toward Harrisburg (later renamed Houston). Some refer to her as &quot;The Messenger of the Alamo.&quot;)
