Can you hear me, Granddaddy? Grand Junction, Tennessee was founded in 1854 and got its naming from the &quot;Grand Junction&quot; of the Memphis and the Charleston to Mississippi Railroad Lines. These are the major North/South and East/West lines running through Grand Junction.

Grand Junction and its railroads were a much sought after prize during the Civil War, for whomever controlled the railroads controlled the rest of West Tennessee. During the War the Union Army held the town, keeping it from the Confederate Army for three years. Much of the town suffered destruction during this time.

After the war, in 1878 the Yellow Fever epidemic came to Grand Junction and wiped-out more than half of the 150 residents left in the town. Most are buried in the local Cemetery. The town started to rebuild, and several buildings from that time still exist.

At the turn of the century, my father's father, a young man in his twenties, moved to Grand Junction to be the telegraph operator for the railroads.

I still communicate with him using the key.

Vintage store - Grand Junction, TN I don't have any information on this building other than I have seen it in a 1940s photo. It is located along Madison Ave. in Grand Junction. It looks like it could have been a general store, but it is not Richardson's which was more famous. Let me know if you have more info.

Rogers & Sons Monuments - Grand Junction, TN Also known as Rogers &amp; Sons Marble Works, this company was established in 1879 by C.J. Rogers and is still in business today.

The thing which fascinates me about this building is the metal rail extending from the front along with the support beams. I am not sure, but I guess it is to help load a completed headstone onto a truck (or wagon in 1879). There are two small doors which can swing open as needed. The cail also crosses over a small wall of marble.

Stars and Stripes art Seen in La Grange, TN

Like every white American, the subjugation of Black people has benefited me in ways beyond my reckoning. Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery - and we should celebrate - but what has happened since is just as insidiously evil. This ruined cabin in west Tennessee likely housed my ancestors' slaves. After the Civil War, it certainly housed their sharecroppers, nominally free but effectively indentured to the land. A lot has changed over the decades, as the thorny vines of the resurgent forest quietly demolished this sad shack. And yet not nearly enough has changed, and we have so far to go to reach a place of justice and tolerance, let alone equality. It feels like we're at a fork in the road where anything is possible, for good or ill. I hope we can make some progress, and that I can contribute in my own limited way.
