The Sullivan County Historical and Genealogical Society (SCHGS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to researching, preserving, and promoting the culture, history, and genealogy of Sullivan County, Tennessee. Established in 1974, it is the oldest county historical society in the state. The SCHGS is located in Blountville, Tennessee in the heart of Sullivan County and is open to the public for research and educational opportunities.
The SCHGS has a library with a wide selection of books, periodicals, and other resources related to Sullivan County history and genealogy. The library also houses collections of photos and other artifacts. In addition to the library, the SCHGS also operates an archives where visitors can access records from many of the county's earliest settlements. The SCHGS also offers a variety of lectures and workshops on local history, genealogy, and other topics of interest to the community.
The SCHGS is active in many community endeavors and participates in various local events, including the annual Heritage Festival and the Blountville Heritage Days. The SCHGS publishes a newsletter, The Annals of Sullivan County, which includes articles, photographs, and other historical information related to the county.
