Plagued by political strife and supported mainly by farmers unable to provide an adequate tax base, its forty-eight year history ended in bankruptcy and its territory became a part of Hamilton County.

The Museum Center at 5ive Points is a non-profit organization in Cleveland, Tennessee dedicated to preserving and sharing the history and culture of the unique region of southeast Tennessee. It houses three galleries, a gift shop, a research library, and a large outdoor amphitheater.

Following the Civil War during Reconstruction, James County was created in 1871 from parts of Bradley County and Hamilton County with Ooltewah as the county seat. James County went bankrupt in 1919 and the county was absorbed by Hamilton County. The Colonial Revival building was the third courthouse for James County. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 (NRHP No. 76001782).
