The West Tennessee Historical Society is a non-profit organization based in Memphis, Tennessee. Founded in 1951, the Society is dedicated to preserving and sharing the history and culture of West Tennessee. The Society does this by collecting, cataloguing, preserving, and interpreting artifacts and documents of historical importance.
The Society is a member of the Tennessee Historical Commission and the American Association for State and Local History. It is also affiliated with the Association for the Study of African American Life and History and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
The Society has several collections, including the Halle Collection of Southern History, the West Tennessee Oral History Collection, and its own permanent collection. It also houses the William Downey Collection of African-American History, the African-American Studies Collection, and the African-American Genealogy Collection.
The Society also offers a variety of educational programs and activities throughout the year. These include an annual conference, workshops, lectures, and other events. It also publishes a quarterly journal, The West Tennessee Historical Society Magazine.
In addition, the Society sponsors field trips, tours, and other activities geared toward local and visiting school groups. The Society also provides research assistance and presents a variety of exhibits at its headquarters in Memphis.
