Minnie Pearl Made Out of Chicken Wire I believe this is an amazing piece of Southern country culture. Ifrst, it's part of the legacy of how the town of Centerville has honored the local legacy. But it's also from a local artist using a rare art form and it appears in a quaint location. The story begins with this statue from 2005: <a href="https://flic.kr/p/h243t" rel="noreferrer nofollow">flic.kr/p/h243t</a> Unhappy with the way city leaders treated the town square traffic leading to the statue, it was moved several times. The city fixed town square traffic and in 2016 then commissioned this chicken wire statue to placed in the same spot as the first. Recently, a more traditional statue was placed on the square: <a href="https://flic.kr/p/2pvxXxq" rel="noreferrer nofollow">flic.kr/p/2pvxXxq</a> The Chicken wire statue needed a new home. A local garden club had the perfect spot. On the east side of town where highway 100/48 cross the Duck River, there's an intersection with the old highway runs between a rock bluff and the river. At that intersection is the Centerville Bluff Garden and this art has been moved to a natural ledge halfway up the bluff. Old Caney Fork Furnace (Williamson County, Tennessee) Historic Caney Fork Furnace in the Fernvale community in Williamson County, Tennessee. The pig iron furnace was in operation by 1832 and closed by 1848. It is also known as the Williamson County Blast Furnace. The Caney Fork Furnace was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 (NRHP No. 75001790 as the Harpeth Furnace (40WM83)).
Old Caney Fork Furnace (Williamson County, Tennessee) Historical marker for the Caney Fork Furnace in the Fernvale Community in Williamson County, Tennessee (erected by the Williamson County Historical Society in 2021). The plaque reads: “This stone stack marks the eastern-most site of a significant state industry that ran along the Western Highland Rim where 33 iron furnaces were in blast by 1847. Tennessee produced over 50,000 tons of pig iron by 1856, and often led the south in production before 1860. By 1832, Moses Speer was operating this industrial site on 2000 acres near the Caney Fork creek. Skilled and unskilled laborers including enslaved peoples worked under a hierarchy governed by the ironmaster. Speer's operation was economically unsuccessful, and the property soon defaulted to Rev. Thomas L. Douglass. The furnace was not in blast by 1848 or after when the property was sold by the heirs of Nicholas Perkins. The Rocky River Coal & Lumber Company bought the land in the 1920s for timber and the Harrison family farmed here beginning in the 1930s. The furnace stack survives as the county's only remnant of an industry that peaked in the 1850s and it is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. When in operation, the furnace would have looked much like its contemporary, Bear Spring Furnace in Stewart County, which was also put into blast in 1832.”
Ruskin Cave College The story of this place is better than my photo, But I've never had good access. Ruskin, TN began as a Socialist Utopia in the late 1890s when they bought land around a cave in Dickson County (now Ruskin Cave). When the Ruskin Co-operative disbanded, the primary building (seen here) had many uses over the next few decades, including as a college and a resort. It's an interesting story you can read on the National Register of Historic Places website here: <a href="https://npgallery.nps.gov/AssetDetail/NRIS/74001911" rel="noreferrer nofollow">npgallery.nps.gov/AssetDetail/NRIS/74001911</a> When I took this picture in 2014, the Ruskin property (especially the cave) was a campground. It was closed in the winter, so I had to look through the trees along highway TN46. At the time, it was owned by the Dickson Renaissance Center, which was soon after purchased by Freed-Hardeman University which didn't need it and sold it. Today, it is a wedding venue where you can't tour the property. They say they are restoring the exterior of the building to look as it did back when it was a college.

Montgomery Bell Tunnel (Cheatham County, Tennessee) The historic Montgomery Bell Tunnel is a water diversion tunnel on a tight bend in the Harpeth River in Cheatham County, Tennessee. The tunnel was constructed 1818-19 and is 290 ft long and roughly 8 ft tall by 15 ft wide. It was built to take advantage of the 17 ft drop in the river to operate an iron forge (called Patterson Forge). Montgomery Bell Tunnel is likely the oldest tunnel built in the United States. It was recognized as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1981 by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 (NRHP No. 71000814 as the Patterson Forge). It was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1994. The tunnel is now part of the Harpeth River State Park. The National Historic Landmark Statement of Significance states: "By tunneling through a 290-foot deep limestone ridge, Montgomery Bell created the first known water diversion tunnel in the United States; in fact, this is the oldest known full-size tunnel of any kind in the country. The tunnel, built between 1818 and 1819, served as a man-made water flume with an approximate 16 foot fall of water, which its owner planned to utilize as the central element of a water-powered industrial site. Bell's tunnel was almost certainly constructed using the long established method known as hand drilling, which utilized hand-held hammers, chisels, and black powder; the arduous labor was done by slaves."

Tennessee Governor Frank Clement Grave – Dickson County Memorial Gardens (Burns, Tennessee) Grave of Frank Goad Clement (1920– 1969) in Dickson County Memorial Gardens in Burns, Tennessee. Clement served as the 41st Governor of Tennessee. He was elected to the last two-year term for a Tennessee Governor (1953-55) and was re-elected for a four-year term (1955-59). He ran again in 1962 and was elected to a new four-year term as governor (1963-1967). Frank Clement was killed in a car accident at age 49.
