Land Between the Lakes is a national recreation area located in Dover, Tennessee. The 170,000-acre peninsula stretches over 40 miles and is surrounded by Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, two of the largest man-made lakes in the United States. The area was created in 1963 when the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers were impounded, forming the two lakes.
