The TVA was created by Congress in 1933 as a New Deal agency to provide navigation, flood control, electricity generation and economic development to the depressed Tennessee Valley. The Chickamauga Dam was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017 (NRHP No. 100001466 as the Chickamauga Hydroelectric Project). The dam, powerhouse, lock and bridge are contributing items to the listing.
