TIPTON-HAYNES HOUSE

JOHNSON CITY, TN

The Tipton-Haynes House is a historic home located in Johnson City, Tennessee. The house was built in 1784 by Colonel John Tipton, one of the first settlers of the area. It is believed to be the oldest surviving log structure in the state. It was built in a traditional colonial style with two stories and four rooms. The structure is made of hand-hewn logs and features a central chimney.

The home is now a state historic site and museum. Visitors can tour the home and explore its many features. Inside, the house contains original period furniture and artifacts. The home also features a kitchen, a smokehouse, and a barn. The grounds of the house include a garden and a cemetery.

The house is important to the history of the region. It was the site of several skirmishes during the Civil War, serving as a refuge for soldiers. The house has also served as a meeting place for Johnson City's first churches.

Today, the Tipton-Haynes House continues to be an important part of the community. It is open for tours and special events throughout the year. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The plant was started in 1924 by the American Printing Company (Fall River, MA) with an employment of 1,200. The mill produced &quot;gray&quot; or unbleached cotton cloth. The plant ceased production in the 1990s and was pulled down in 2012.

Sabine Hill Note: this photo was taken in 2011 when the property was endangered and not open to the public. I took this photo while a passenger in a car along highway US321. There are more trees today, making this a tougher view, but you can go visit it now.

Sabine Hill, also known as Happy Valley, Watauga Point, and the General Nathaniel Taylor House, is a historic house in Elizabethton, Tennessee. The two-story Federal style building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It is an excellent example of federal architecture. It was threatened by demolition in 2007 when the owners sought to have the property rezoned for apartments. The rezoning request was denied and the home was bought by several preservation-minded locals who secured it until the State of Tennessee/Tennessee Historical Commission could purchase the museum-quality property. It is now restored and opened to the public on November 1, 2017, as a unit of Sycamore Shoals State Park. The property is operated by the Park under a memorandum of understanding with the Tennessee Historical Commission.
