The Homestake Visitor Center is located in Lead, South Dakota, in the heart of the historic Homestake Mining District. The center is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and interpreting the rich history of the Homestake Mining District and the people who lived and worked there. The Visitor Center offers a variety of interactive exhibits, educational programs and activities, as well as historical artifacts, photographs, and maps.
The Homestake Visitor Center is situated on the former site of the Homestake Mining Company’s main office building, which was constructed in 1877. The center is housed in the original building and includes interactive displays, educational programs and activities, and a research library. The exhibits tell the story of the mining district’s history, from its early days as a gold mining camp to its current status as a National Historic Landmark District.
The Visitor Center also offers guided tours of the historic Homestake Mine and the surrounding area, as well as guided hikes along the historic trails that traverse the area. The center also offers a variety of outdoor activities, including fishing, camping, and picnicking. Additionally, the Visitor Center offers a variety of educational programs for school-aged children, including field trips and camps.
In addition to its exhibits, activities, and educational programs, the Visitor Center hosts a variety of special events throughout the year, including the annual Homestake Mining Days Festival and the Homestake Opera Festival. The center also offers a gift shop, where visitors can purchase souvenirs, books, and other items related to the history of the Homestake Mining District.
