I turned around to snap a photo looking towards the Sioux Falls Regional Airport. A short time before this shot, a dirt road about a quarter mile away from this spot had numerous vehicles with their bright headlights sitting on it. I assume the people in them were watching the light show. The sky above Sioux Falls has plenty of light pollution.
I heard that the aurora borealis was going to put on an impressive show, so I headed out to an abandoned old country schoolhouse. Many of the photos turned out okay, but I didn't realize that so many other people would have the same idea, driving around in the countryside to view the show. In more than a few instances people driving by would have their headlights turned up bright, making photographing the sky challenging. In this shot, the headlights were bright enough to wash over the sides of the highway and dimly illuminate the ditch and schoolhouse.
