12P/PonsBrooks_20231119 Comet 12P/Pons–Brooks 12P/Pons–Brooks is a Halley-type periodic comet with an orbital period of 71 years. It was discovered in 1812 and later recovered during passages in 1883 and 1954. It is expected to brighten to an apparent magnitude of 4.5 (visible to the naked eye) during its upcoming passage in April 2024. This image shows the comet during a recent outburst, releasing billions of pounds of gas and dust while brightening to an apparent magnitude of 8.8 (about 60x brighter than the predicted magnitude of 13.2). Note how the inner coma surrounding the core is much brighter than the faint outer coma. The rings appear significantly dimmer than they were at opposition because of the Seeliger effect. Also, three of its major moons appear in this image. Saturn_20220925_Animation The dance of Saturn and the 5 innermost major moons of the Saturnian system. Clockwise from the top: Tethys, Mimas (very faint), Dione, Rhea, and Enceladus. Saturn has a total of 146 known moons as of the date this was posted. This is one of my most ambitious projects ever. It is pretty common to see animations of the major moons of Jupiter since they are very bright and typically don't require any fancy processing. In contrast, I haven't seen many animations showing the moons of Saturn. This is because these moons are much fainter than Saturn, so they have to be processed separately and blended in with layers. It's hard enough to do this for a single image, much less an entire sequence. This 36-frame animation shows about 3.5 hours' worth of motion. Each frame came from a 5-minute 100-FPS video. For each video, I stacked the best 10% for Saturn, and the best 50% for the moons (stretched to show the moons while overexposing Saturn). I then used NASA's planetary data system (<a href="https://pds-rings.seti.org/tools/" rel="noreferrer nofollow">pds-rings.seti.org/tools/</a>) to manually generate a diagram corresponding to each of the 36 frames. I aligned each PDS diagram to its respective Saturn image using PixInsight's dynamic alignment, then carefully blended in all 5 moons from each overexposed image with its respective Saturn image using layers in GIMP. The PDS diagrams were critical for tracking Mimas because it was lost in the glare of Saturn during the first few frames of the animation. I took the creative liberty to blend in whatever pixels were in the calculated position of Mimas as shown by the diagram. The purists will argue that this invalidates my entire project... But astrophotography is art, after all. This tedious process took almost 2 full weekend days, but it was so worth it. This was a huge challenge for me since I've been sick with the flu all week (only my 2nd time ever getting it). But when I saw clear skies in the forecast, I knew it was time to push the outside of the envelope. Just like Chuck Yeager did when he broke the sound barrier while dealing with the pain of 2 broken ribs. This was the perfect opportunity to apply all of the knowledge and tools I've picked up over the last year of owning this telescope. Everything worked perfectly and this is my best-ever image of Saturn at opposition. It's bittersweet to say, but I might upgrade to a bigger scope by the time Saturn returns to opposition in 2024. I love the C6, but the C9.25 will probably be my next step. Jupiter_20221015 New and improved version! WinJUPOS derotation leads to a much sharper result. This is a derotation of 5 images (500 frames each). Jupiter, the largest planet in the Solar System, about 3 weeks after its 2022 opposition. The Great Red Spot, visible in the southwest, is a giant storm with a diameter larger than Earth. Wind speeds in the storm peak at 268 mph (432 km/h). This is one of my top 3 Jupiter images from the 2022 season. Using this 6" SCT with a planetary camera is so much fun, and the results are shocking to me. I could have never imagined getting images this sharp when I started this hobby back in 2018! Jupiter_20220924 Jupiter, the largest planet in the Solar System, 3 days before its 2022 opposition. One of the Galilean moons, Io, casts a dark shadow as it transits across the face of Jupiter. The moon itself is visible immediately left of the shadow, but it blends in with the background clouds. This is one of my top 3 Jupiter images from the 2022 season. Using this 6" SCT with a planetary camera is so much fun, and the results are shocking to me. I could have never imagined getting images this sharp when I started this hobby back in 2018! C2022E3_20230214 Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) C/2022 E3 (ZTF) is a long-period comet from the Oort cloud. It reached perihelion (1.11 AU from the Sun) on 01/12 for the first time in 50,000 years. It passed 0.28 AU from Earth on 02/01. Since its orbit has changed, the comet will either return in many millions of years or be ejected into interstellar space. The green glow in the coma is the emission of diatomic carbon. This was my 3rd and final attempt at this beautiful comet. The background stars and galaxies are more interesting here than in the previous image, although the comet looked better when it was brighter (see here: <a href="https://flic.kr/p/2ofjJqt" rel="noreferrer nofollow">flic.kr/p/2ofjJqt</a>). All of the galaxies visible here are over 200 million light-years away. Some of the brightest ones are PGC 15975, PGC 15924, PGC 15866, and PGC 213292.
