[This series of 6 photos was taken in early morning fog] The Bank of Hampton (Hampton, South Carolina) dates from 1891-1892. The architect is known--a local man although born in France, named Vincent J. Fontaine, who designed several buildings in Hampton County. The cost of this commercial structure was just over $3000. The 2-story red brick building is in common bond and exhibits traits of Italianate architecture. The structural elements show a symmetrical arrangement, even to the side facades being almost alike. A stepped parapet with sign panel graces the front facade; the side elevations are marked by low flat parapets. A sawtooth pattern of brick is in the cornice. Raised brickwork at the corners of the front and rear facades simulates pilasters that are capped with a sort-of battlement motif. Windows throughout are characterized by segmental arches; the two bottom windows on the front elevation are larger than others in the building and have single-light transoms. All lower floor windows are covered with metal bars, necessary for the financial intention of the structure. Segmental arches are also used to top the two visible doors--the front facade and on one side facade. The slightly recessed entry has double doors of glass and paneled wood with a cast-iron sill. The bank was in operation until 1926; from the 1930s to 1960s it was used a rented commercial space with law offices on the second floor, appropriate as the county courthouse was across the street. Since 1987 the Hampton Museum and Visitors’ Center has used both floors. The Bank of Hampton was added to the National Register of Historic Places May 30, 2001 with ID#01000606.
