The Salinan Heritage Preservation Association (SHPA) is a non-profit organization based in Atascadero, California. It was founded in 2002 with the aim of preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the Salinan people who once inhabited the Central Coast of California.
The Salinan people are recognized as one of the oldest indigenous groups in California and have a rich cultural heritage that includes language, art, music, and traditional practices. However, their culture has been threatened and largely erased by colonization and modernization.
SHPA’s mission is to raise awareness about the Salinan people’s history and culture, and to support efforts to preserve their traditions and practices. The organization works with the Salinan Tribal Council, local schools, and community organizations to educate people about Salinan heritage through various activities such as cultural events, workshops, and educational programs.
SHPA also advocates for the protection of Salinan archaeological sites and works closely with government agencies to ensure that these sites are preserved and respected. The organization has been instrumental in the establishment of the Salinan National Monument in San Luis Obispo County.
Through its efforts, the Salinan Heritage Preservation Association is dedicated to promoting a greater understanding and appreciation of the Salinan people and their contributions to the cultural diversity of California.
