The water here is acid and iron-rich, coming up to the surface from underground mines, staining the rocks rust-red. Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a major source of water pollution and the cause of the extensive stream degradation and environmental damage.

Where did this mine water come from?
The Ocean Coal Company, a subsidiary of Berwind-White Coal Company of Philadelphia, PA established several mines in this region including in 1900, Ocean No. 2. It is purported that drainage from Ocean No. 2 is the chief cause of the Red Waterfall.

Why is it acidic and full of iron?
Hundreds of millions of years ago, the massive Pittsburgh Coal Seam formed underneath parts of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio from ancient swamp plants. Sand, silts, shells, and other matter were deposited and made a rock seal over the carbon rich vegetation. This rock contained the mineral &quot;pyrite&quot;, made of iron and sulfur.

Cola mining exposes pyrite to oxygen and ground water causing the formation of sulfuric acid and a number of red, orange, and yellow compounds. AMD occurs when this mine water seeps, or in this sea, bursts out into streams. The yellow sulfur can be seen in the shale near coal seams.

May 29, 2023: Veterans Memorial, Irwin, Pennsylvania Seen just before the start of the annual Memorial Day Parade in downtown Irwin, Pennsylvania is the Veterans Memorial, which stands at the corner of Main Street and Pennsylvania Avenue adjacent to the entrance to Irwin Park. It's a tall, narrow granite slab about eight feet in height, surmounted consecutively by a globe and a bronze eagle with wings outstretched in flight, and its front face is engraved with patriotic imagery (namely a dagger and shield with stars-and-stripes insignia) and dedicatory text. The monument in its original form was dedicated on November 11, 1943 by the local J. Howard Snyder Post No. 781, V.F.W. &quot;in honor of the men and women of Irwin and community who served in the Armed Forces of the United States of America in all wars&quot; but, in all likelihood, bearing in mind specifically the combatants in the then-ongoing Second World War. However, it has been expanded several times in subsequent years: newer elements of the ensemble include the bronze plaques flanking each side, as well as a semicircle of low square stones that ring the main slab on its rear side, individually representing each war fought by the U.S. military throughout its history (from the Revolution through the War on Terror and also including the Cold War) and each inscribed with a relevant quote from a famous political speech, work of literature, or combatants themselves.

The Cathedral of Learning, University of Pittsburgh, 5th Avenue and Bigelow Boulevard, Oakland, Pittsburgh, PA Built in 1926-1934, this Gothic Revival-style tower was designed by Charles Klauder to serve as an administration building and classroom building for the University of Pittsburgh. The building stands 42 stories and 535 feet (163 meters) tall, being the second-tallest university building in the world, only exceeded by the newer Moscow State University Main Building in Russia, and was the second-tallest building in Pittsburgh at the time of its completion, though it lost this status in 1970. The building is clad in limestone with a massing that tapers towards the top and center with multiple setbacks, a four-story podium at the base with bay windows and tall recessed gothic arched entrance bays, buttresses and tracery on the exterior facade, pinnacles and a parapet with multiple gothic arches at the top of the building, a theater to the southeast of the main building with similar exterior features but a much lower height, known as the Stephen Foster Memorial, and a series of themed classrooms with various decorative finishes inside the building. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, and is a contributing structure in the Schenley Farms Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The building today remains the principal structure of the University of Pittsburgh campus, dominating the surrounding Oakland neighborhood, and standing in the middle of a large lawn with trees and smaller buildings at the edges.

Alumni Hall, University of Pittsburgh, 5th Avenue, Oakland, Pittsburgh, PA Built in 1914-1915, this Classical Revival-style building was designed by Benno Janssen to serve as the Masonic Temple of Pittsburgh. The building features a limestone-clad exterior, a side-gable red terra cotta tile roof with acroterions, corinthian pilasters on the upper floors, decorative medallions, roman lattice motifs on the top floor, cornices with dentils, one-over-one windows, decorative reliefs, recessed entrance bays with decorative trim surrounds, and decorative lamppost light fixtures flanking the main entrance bays. The building is a contributing structure in the Schenley Farms Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The building today serves as an office building and alumni center for the University of Pittsburgh, known as Alumni Hall.

Heinz Memorial Chapel, University of Pittsburgh, Bellefield Avenue, Oakland, Pittsburgh, PA Built in 1933-1938, this Gothic Revival-style chapel was designed by Charles Klauder to serve as a chapel for the University of Pittsburgh, and a memorial to Anna Margaretha Heinz, with funds for the chapel’s construction being donated by John Heinz upon his death in 1919. The building features a French Gothic-inspired exterior with a metal spire, gabled and hipped slate roof, limestone cladding, buttresses, a polygonal nave and apse flanking a central gabled wing, a recessed gothic arched main entrance portal with decorative reliefs and carved wooden doors, gothic arched stained glass windows with decorative tracery, pinnacles and tracery on the parapets, and low aisles flanking the main nave. Inside, the chapel features decorative woodwork, a soaring gothic vaulted ceiling, stone staircases, stained glass windows, large pendant lights, spiral staircases, a narthex with a wooden screen wall at the entrance to the sanctuary, and an ornate wooden altar. The building is a contributing structure in the Schenley Farms Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
