The Mid Mon Valley Cultural Trust (MMVCT) is located in Charleroi, Pennsylvania. Founded in 2013, the MMVCT is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the Monongahela Valley region. September 1, 2019: McWilliams Building and clock tower, Main Street at 3rd Street, Irwin, Pennsylvania One of the most well-known landmarks of downtown Irwin, Pennsylvania is the McWilliams Building, which has been standing sentinel at the southwest corner of Main and Third Streets since 1877. Originally two stories in height, the Italianate decorative aesthetic employed by the original architect was decidedly <i>passé</i> by the time the top floor was added in 1905, yet the two discrete phases of the building's construction nonetheless display a harmonious and relatively seamless stylistic continuity marked by a pronounced emphasis on verticality: the light massing, the tall and narrow dimensions of the windows with their distinctive segmentally-arched crowns, and the brick quoins that both delineate the exterior corners and climb the façade as ersatz pilaster strips between pairs of windows all serve to draw the eye upward, while the 1905 addition singlehandedly supplied the overlapping corbels that undergird the roofline. Doubtless the McWilliams Building's most iconic feature, however, is its distinctive corner tower, inside which is mounted an 1875 Seth Thomas Model 127 mechanical clock that draws power from a winding mechanism designed by Thomas McWilliams himself in his capacity as Irwin's resident jeweler, clockmaker, and optician. The clock operated reliably from the time of its installation until sometime in the mid-1940s, but was brought back to working order courtesy of a 1993 restoration financed with surplus funds left over from Irwin's 125th anniversary celebration. The building now houses the offices of Reliant Systems, a distributor of electronic security systems whose owner, Larry Cole, serves proudly as the clock's caretaker. September 1, 2019: Fourth Street Arch, Irwin, Pennsylvania Spanning its namesake thoroughfare on the west side of Main Street in Irwin, Pennsylvania is the Fourth Street Arch, an expression of civic pride and the centerpiece of a long-germinating streetscape project that sought to beautify and revitalize the borough's downtown business district after decades of decline. The Irwin Project, as it was known, was launched in 2004 in the wake of a visit by a team of architecture students from Penn State University as part of the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor Project, a nationwide effort at raising awareness of the history of America's first coast-to-coast "auto trail", partly through civic initiatives such as this in the towns and cities along its route. Irwin's municipal government saw participation in the project as a way to both draw in tourist traffic and combat the slow but steady flight of businesses away from downtown to locations along busy Route 30, mostly outside the borough limits. In addition to the ornate wrought-iron gateway seen here, which was unveiled to much fanfare in summer 2012, the $1.9 million, PennDOT-funded project also comprised wayfinding signage, new crosswalks and street lighting, and bus shelters, planters, and other street furniture. Although correlation is not causation, the subsequent years did indeed see a new vitality injected into downtown Irwin, with new shops and restaurants occupying once-vacant spaces and a growing calendar of popular community events.
