Union Trust Building, Grant Street and 5th Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA Built in 1916-1917, this Gothic Revival-style building was designed by Frederick J. Osterling for Henry Clay Frick to serve as a shopping arcade, known as the Union Arcade, and in 1923, became home to the Union Trust Company, with the interior being renovated to accommodate their offices.  The building features a stone-clad exterior with decorative gothic tracery at the base of the mansard roof, two towers with gabled roofs and decorative Gothic trim elements, one-over-one double-hung windows, stone piers flanking the window bays, gothic arched window bays on the second floor of the exterior facade, retail shopfronts at the base, gabled dormers, skylights on the roof that allow light into the interior light courts, decorative pinnacles, and decorative tracery at the transoms above the entrance doors and canopies on the building’s Grant Street and 5th Avenue facades.  The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.  The building today houses various office and retail tenants.

The Catholic Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania in Pittsburgh, PA is an organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Catholic heritage of the region. Founded in 1920, the Society collects, preserves and shares the rich history of the Catholic Church in Western Pennsylvania. They also strive to foster an appreciation and understanding of the Catholic faith and culture in the region.

The Society preserves and makes available to the public a collection of books, manuscripts, photographs, artifacts and other objects related to the history of the Catholic Church in the region. Through its archives, the Society also serves as a repository for the records of the dioceses of Pittsburgh and Greensburg, as well as the records of various parishes and religious orders. In addition, the Society publishes a quarterly journal, The Catholic Historical Review, which features articles about the history of the Catholic Church in the region.

The Society is involved in a variety of educational and outreach programs. Its public programs include lectures, seminars, and exhibits, as well as tours of the archives and library. The Society also works with local schools and other organizations to provide educational programs about the history of the Catholic Church in Western Pennsylvania. Through its educational programs, the Society strives to foster an understanding of the Catholic faith and culture in the region.
