SLOSS Furnaces Association is located in Birmingham, Alabama and is part of the city’s industrial heritage. It is a National Historic Landmark that was built in 1882 and operated until 1971. The furnaces were originally constructed to produce iron and pig iron, and are the only blast furnaces in the world to be preserved in their original condition. The site consists of two furnaces, a machine shop, coal bins, and an office.

The furnaces are named after James Withers Sloss, who established the Birmingham Coal and Iron Company in 1881. The furnaces were constructed by convict labor, and the site was used to produce pig iron until the early 1920s. From then on, it was used primarily as a repair facility for the Southern Railway.

Today, the furnaces are open to the public with guided tours and special events. Visitors can explore the furnaces, machine shop, and other buildings, as well as learn about the history of the site and its impact on the city of Birmingham. The site also features a visitor center, gift shop, and walking trails. The SLOSS Furnaces Association also works to promote the preservation of historic sites in the region.
