The Bridesburg Historical Society (BHS) is a non-profit organization located in the Bridesburg neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1975, the Society is dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of the history, culture, and heritage of the Bridesburg community.
The Society collects, preserves, and shares artifacts, records, photographs, and oral histories that document the history of Bridesburg. The permanent collections document the lives of Bridesburg’s early settlers and their descendants, as well as the industrial and manufacturing history of the area. The Society also houses an extensive library of research materials, including books, maps, and newspapers.
BHS hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including lectures and workshops on the history of the area, historical reenactments, and guided walking tours. The Society also sponsors an annual Bridesburg Day celebration, which includes a parade and other activities.
The Society’s headquarters is located in the historic Jacob Grafius House, a two-story brick building with two garages and a large yard. It serves as a museum, library, and meeting space. The building is also available for rent for private events.
The Society is supported by donations from individuals, businesses, and foundations. Members of BHS receive free admission to the Society’s events and discounted rates on guided tours and workshops. The Society also sells books, t-shirts, and other souvenirs in its gift shop.
