EPHRATA CLOISTER

EPHRATA, PA

Solar Eclipse 2017 - Beginning to End I really had doubts that this one was going to work out! The forecast was calling for a 60% chance of thunderstorms in Lancaster, PA. I had some trouble with thick clouds in the beginning but in the end - it all worked out. Each photo was made with a Canon 70D and a Canon 17-40 mm f/4L lens @ 36 mm. The Ephrata Cloister is a National Historic Landmark located in Ephrata, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1732 by German religious leader and mystic Conrad Beissel, the Cloister was home to a religious community of celibate men and women who followed a strict lifestyle of communal living, prayer, and farming. The Cloister was home to both the celibate religious order and a printing press, which produced some of the earliest German language books in the American colonies.

The Cloister is composed of eight buildings which are connected by a two-story walkway. The buildings include a meetinghouse, a dormitory, a bakery, a kitchen, a laundry, a watchtower, and a cemetery. The interior of the meetinghouse features a center aisle, a raised platform, and a pulpit. The dormitory, which housed the single members of the Cloister, has two dormitory wings, each with its own entrance. The bakery, kitchen, and laundry are connected by a common walkway, and the watchtower, which was used to call the members to prayer, stands nearby.

The grounds of the Ephrata Cloister are surrounded by a stone wall, and the buildings are constructed of native limestone and fieldstone. The Cloister is a popular tourist attraction, and visitors can tour the buildings and explore the gardens. The Ephrata Cloister is one of the most important historical sites in Pennsylvania and a testament to the German religious heritage of the region.
