Union Fire Company No. 1 is a volunteer fire department located in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Established in 1872, the fire company is one of the oldest in Cumberland County. The organization is made up of firefighters and emergency medical personnel who serve the borough of Carlisle and surrounding areas. The department provides fire suppression, fire prevention, and emergency medical services. It operates out of two fire stations located in the borough center and on the outskirts of town. The Union Fire Company No. 1 is equipped with a variety of firefighting apparatus, including pumper and tanker trucks, rescue vehicles, and an aerial ladder truck. It is also the only fire department in Cumberland County to own and operate a fireboat. The department is composed of over 50 volunteer firefighters, paramedics, and emergency medical technicians. Its members are devoted to providing excellent service and protecting the lives and property of the community. The fire company is funded through donations, grants, and fundraisers. It is a dedicated organization that is committed to serving its community and keeping it safe.

Broad Street Market, Harrisburg, PA Broad Street Market claims to be the oldest continuously operating market house in the country. The market was founded in 1860; the stone building dates from 1863 and the brick one from 1878. Such buildings were meant to replace higgledy-piggledy outdoor stalls, providing a clean, sheltered, place for farmers bringing their wares to market. During the Civil War, the market helped feed hundreds of thousands of Union soldiers who were stationed at Camp Curtin nearby. At its peak in the 1920s, the Broad Street Market had over 725 vendors, many of whom leased outdoor space and waited years for an indoor stall to become available. John N. Kinnard, the Market Master of that era, noted that one small farmer might sell just a few dozen eggs while another “sold more than $2,000 worth of live turkeys in one day.” The Broad Street Market back then was known as the “Dutch Fair” because of the predominance of Amish and Mennonite vendors. Nevertheless, Kinnard claimed it also could have been called the “Congress of Nations” in view of the ethnic diversity, which then included “Germans, Austrians, Italians, Russian Jews, Hungarians and full-blood native-born Americans.” Sadly (and coincidentally, as I am just researching and posting last summer's photos), half of the brick building was gutted by fire in July 2023 (a couple of weeks ago). The fire was caused by an electrical malfunction in a ceiling fan installed in 2017. There were no injuries. The city is pledging to rebuild.
